Zoe the Zonked
Yesterday was Zoe's first visit to the pediatrician and everything went great. In fact, Zoe didn't mind the visit at all because she slept through the whole thing. The pediatrician could not believe how well she sleeps. She even said that in her 11 years of practice, Zoe is the first baby to not wake up through an entire exam. At first I thought this would be a great thing because she is so quiet and difficult to arouse but it is proving to be difficult for Ilise when feeding time approaches. She rarely wakes up on her own to tell us that she needs fed so that puts a little extra work on Ilise to remember to get up at night. It is a struggle for Zoe to get through almost every feeding without falling asleep. Everyone says it is completely normal for this and most mothers experience it but I'm not so sure they ever had a baby that slept as soundly as Zoe. We have tried every single method that has been tossed at us to wake her up by the pediatricians, nurses, family and friends but to no avail. She just loves her sleep. It feels cruel when I try to wake her up with some of these methods but she hardly notices at all. I usually start with a diaper change before I hand her off to Ilise. Then I tickle her feet and underarms, stroke her sides, chest, head or anywhere that might irritate her. This usually doesn't work so Ilise tries stroking her back with a cold wet cloth and she completely ignores her. Sometimes she will respond to a bath right before feeding but that will only help out in the beginning because she will end up falling asleep half-way through the feeding regardless. Ilise and I thought that since we are both very passive, our baby would be the complete opposite just to keep us on our toes. I think the opposite happened and our passive personalities only compounded to form Zoe's ultra passive personality. We love our little girl!!

You are right, those methods never work to wake up a baby. If they want to sleep, they want to sleep. I hated having nurses bug me about waking up the baby to eat. I'm of the opinion, that as long as your baby is healthy, let them sleep. They'll wake up when they're hungry. But then, maybe Zoe won't. Every baby is different. :)
She really is so beautiful, all that dark hair. I see the little hat I gave to you, and it is darling on her, just as I pictured. Though its almost a shame to cover up her beautiful hair!
She is so cute! Well, at least you can get some pretty cute pictures while she's asleep (like the one of her by the tree).
Yeah, it is always trail and error for Philip and I as new parents.
She sounds exactly like Kaitlin in the beginning! And we all know how she's turned out, but that doesn't mean Zoe's going to morph into instant teenager at 3 months like Kait did. We keep telling ourselves that Kaitlin is just "special". I bet Zoe will keep her laid back style. Don't worry she's not going to starve, but Ilise may have to pump.
Let her sleep. It will all change soon enough. Though, Kaitlin still won't wake up for anything. :S
